Those who have visited old houses and heard strange noises and saw unusual shadows give rise to the credence of real life haunted houses. However, most of the stories are just that, stories that make for good entertainment.

LaLaurie Mansion – New Orleans, Louisiana

Located in the middle of the French Quarter which is the oldest part of the city, the home of Dr. Louis and Delphine LaLaurie is rumored to be haunted by the ghosts of slaves who were reportedly tortured in the attic. Such screams are haunting the current owners and rumors of the troubles go back for many years. The house was once owned by actor Nicholas Cage.

Mordecai House – Raleigh, North Carolina

So famous that it has been featured in an episode of “Ghost Hunters”, the Mordecai House was originally owned by Moses Mordecai and his decedents for many years until 1964 when it became the property of the city and was incorporated into a park. The ghost is reportedly that of Mary Willis Mordecai Turk who passed away in 1937. Supposedly, the ghost will play the piano and a misty apparition appears in the area as well. Interestingly enough, all of the sightings have the ghost wearing the same set of clothes.

Lemp Mansion – St. Louis, Missouri

What is now an inn and restaurant was once a private home where three suicides took place over its history. So famous that it became a Life Magazine story in 1980, today the owners offer haunted tours of the location.

Lizzie Borden House – Fall River, Massachusetts

Arguably the most famous murders in the 19th century took place in this home where the parents of Lizzie Borden where brutally killed with an axe. The ghosts of her parents still haunt the home where Lizzie spent the rest of her life.

Winchester House – San Jose, California

The original owner of the house was William Winchester, part of the famous family that developed the rifle bearing their name. Supposedly, the wife of William Winchester was haunted by those who had been killed by the rifles created by her late husband. So, the home was built to confuse the ghosts with doors that led to nowhere, trap doors and other oddities as well.

McRaven Home – Vicksburg, Mississippi

Damaged during the Civil War and used as a hospital, it is supposedly haunted by the soldiers who died there as well as the wife of the owner who tried to interact with the ghosts.

Villisca Ax Murder House – Villisca, Iowa

The wandering spirits of six people brutally murdered with an ax supposedly roam the hallways and rooms. You can find out for yourself if you want to stay the night.
