The ability to have a successful yard sale starts when you plan ahead and take into account the different factors that will affect the success of the event. It takes more than just putting your stuff out in the driveway and setting prices, you’ll need to follow at least ten proven methods to ensure that your yard sale is a success.

Everything Must Go

Arguably the most important aspect of your yard sale is having enough items on display. You’ll want at least 100 items or more to attract those who may otherwise drive by. So, if it can go, then put it out for sale.

Price Each Item

Every item for sale should have a tag with the price on it. This is especially important if you have sales helpers who will not have to ask you about the price of a particular item. Plus, the easier you make it for customers, the greater the chances for a successful yard sale.

Tables for Expensive Items

Presentation is the key and your more expensive items should be displayed on tables with nice tablecloths if they can fit. The better your wares look, the more you can charge.

Variety

In addition to having a lot of items for sale, you’ll need a good variety as well. From shoes to kid’s items to yard-related products and more, the greater variety you have on display will mean a better chance at pulling in more potential customers.

Use Lot of Signs

Be sure you have yard sale signs that catch people driving in both directions and cover most, if not all areas to your street. You can even use double-sided signs and be sure to write in big, can’t miss letters so that people will know what is happening.

Have Plenty of Cash on Hand

You’ll want to be able to break $20 bills easily, so go to the bank and get plenty of small bills and coins so you can easily make change.

Be Noticeable

If you wear an apron, people will know you are part of the sale which makes it easier for them to find you.

Bags & Boxes

If you have plenty of plastic bags and boxes, people can use them to carry away your items and you will have less to clean up around your home.

Charity

When the sale is over the remaining items will need to be donated to a charitable group. After all, you are selling the items to get them out of your home. So, if they didn’t go during the sale, it’s time to donate them.

In the end, a successful yard sale provides you with the means of unloading unwanted items and make a little money on the side.
