The Hiram Scutt Mansion in Joliet is one of the town’s most infamous “haunted houses”. The “haunted mansion” was designed by the architect James C Weese and built in 1882. It was built in the Second Empire style and had elements influenced by the Eastlake movement.
Hiram Scutt was the man that had it built and Hiram held ten patents for barb wire. Hiram Scutt served in the civil war and opened H. B. Scutt & Co. which was the first barb wire manufacturer in Joliet in 1872. When Hiram Scutt passed away in 1889, his son Frank W Scutt took over the mansion. It was then sold Daniel Watson who had a variety of women’s schools operate in the mansion until 1977. After 1977, it became a single family residence once again. It has recently opened to the public for banquets, private weddings, corporate events, and murder mystery’s until the last owner passed away.
This three story mansion was listed at $159,000 just a few days ago and resulted in over 70 showings in a week. The house is 4,960 square feet and is on the National Register of Historic Places. There were multiple contracts on the house and Bank of America has already accepted an offer but will not disclose what the home went under contract for. We will know what the bank accepted once the house officially closes. There was much interest in the home after it went viral as a “haunted mansion” and people became aware of the potential for the home. It is truly unique and one of a kind.
There have been different ghost hunter and supernatural groups that have visited the home on many different occasions. These groups claim to have had supernatural experiences upon visiting the home but these groups are in the business to say that. One group claims that the house’s two original owners and their children haunt the home. The most infamous room in the house is the “doll room” for supernatural activity.
There have been several deaths in the home including the original owner. There have been two murders in the home and at least three of the home owners have died in the house. One of the recent deaths was in 2004 when someone attending a party was shot and killed in the house. The last owner suddenly died in 2007 and is the reason that the home went into foreclosure.
Is the property a haunted mansion? Whether the house is haunted or isn’t is up for debate. What is for sure is that the house went under contract quickly since it was priced aggressively. So the moral of the story is that you can sell any home whether its haunted or not if priced correctly.
